June 20-24, 2011 More salad and peas
Red and green oak leaf lettuces (back center) are thriving, but the spinach (far right) is threatening to bolt. Kohlrabis (center bottom) are slowly maturing, and some of the bunching onions (left bottom) are nearly ready.
Summer school dad: Picking up son and picking peas
This week, Steve stopped by the garden when his son was dropped off from the summer school bus. He and his second grader helped water, rake dried grass to mulch plants, haul wood chips for the center aisle, and picked lettuces and a salad for family snacks. Thanks!
Cucumbers in bloom!
Ms. Niessen's first graders (Nuestro Mundo) transplanted these cucumbers in mid-May. Already tiny cucumbers are forming! See that whitish-green prickly thing at the end of the withering flower? That's it! A cucumber on the way!
Gladiolias flourish!
In May, the second graders in Mr. Pedracine and Ms. Engen's classes buried gladiolia bulbs along the outside edge of the garden. They have withstood the nibbles of rabbits to emerge strong beside the tomatoes, peppers, basil, and Three Sisters gardens. Look for wide, flat blades of green--they should be pointed on top, but the rabbits ate the tips.
