First Graders and Tasteful Literature
Three reading groups read food books: "The Giant Pumpkin", "Vegetable Soup" and "Tortillas", then set about making and eating the food! We used the last pumpkin found in the garden in October, which had been decorating the classroom for the month. We roasted the seeds, then steamed the flesh and created soup out of it, just like in the giant pumpkin book. (Unfortunately, I didn't get any photos; sorry!)
We also used kale from the garden for vegetable soup for the second book, as well as other veggies from my CSA share. Also, we did the tasting of veggies which represent the different parts of the plant, like we did in your class 2-3 years ago. You should've seen the kids gobble up those golden beets, kale, avocado, beans, red onions, lettuce, etc!
